ROAD policing officers are putting the brakes on danger drivers in Bingley after mounting the first in a series of ‘sting’ operations on a busy bypass.

Bradford District Police’s Operation Steerside team has said more is in the works after officers caught 10 speeding drivers in one night in new patrols on the Bingley Bypass.

All of the drivers were caught at speeds of 65-70mph in the 50 mph zone of the bypass, during the evening of Monday 7 June, and will now be dealt with through fixed penalty notices.

Two other cars were also stopped for motoring offences, but no drivers were seen involved in racing.

Police mounted the operation in response to community concerns regarding speeding on the bypass, and it is the latest of a series of ongoing Steerside deployments in Bradford.

Operation Steerside was launched in 2017 to tackle dangerous driving in the district, and has evolved into a multi-agency partnership, instead of a purely police-led enforcement operation.

Agencies including the police, schools and Bradford Council work collaboratively to continue with enforcement, but also look at changing behaviours, including by working with young people in schools and youth settings.

Inspector Craig Stothers of the Shipley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are well aware of residents concern regarding dangerous anti-social driving and speeding in the district, and mounted this latest operation on the bypass due to issues with night time speeding there.

“All of those drivers caught by our Steerside officers are being dealt with and we want to get a clear warning out to motorists that these checks will continue, both on the bypass and elsewhere.

“I would ask residents to keep telling us about dangerous driving in their communities via 101 or our online reporting services, to make sure we are targeting these patrols where they are most needed."
