ROBERT Tuleja and Frantisek Balaz both volunteer at the St Columba’s Food Bank in Tong Street, Bradford, and organise food collections.

The cousins, aged 18 and 17 respectively, were part of a group of parishioners who helped to set the food bank up. Joseph Yewdall, who works at the food bank, described the two as “kind, respectful, and good mannered” to all those who visit the food bank.

He said: “They see it as helping marginalised people in Holme Wood and Bierley. As children of immigrants - who have lived in Bradford for the last 12 years - they are a wonderful example to their siblings, their school friends, and the parish community.”

The two both study at Bradford College and Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College.

SEVENTEEN-year-old Martha Holmes volunteers at indoor child’s soft play venue Dan’s Den in Ilkley, which is run as a not-for-profit company. The aim of the company is to provide a fun, safe and clean space for children.

Martha spends at least 12 hours a week volunteering at Dan’s Den, and particularly enjoys cooking healthy meals and tasty treats for the children and parents. Caroline Kelly, centre manager, said what makes Martha such a valued member of the team is how humble she is.

She said: “Martha’s understated view of herself makes her all the more special. We particularly love her need for absolute perfection in everything she does.”

CHILDREN at Shirley Manor Primary in Wyke are part of the Archbishop of York’s Youth Scheme.

As part of the scheme they have Dementia Friends training and have been looking at ways to make a difference in the community. After finishing their training, the children got involved with helping at a residential home for the elderly.

Year Four teacher Zoe Cooper said the scheme has helped the children to develop pride for their community.

She said: “The class as a whole have worked hard as a committed team all year. Within the class there are children who have their own hurdles to overcome whether it be academically or socially but the children are always there for each other.”
