A COMMUNITY group formed to help those living with dementia has been nominated for this year’s Telegraph & Argus Community Stars Awards.

Baildon Dementia Action Group has been working for 18 months aiming to raise awareness and understanding of dementia locally, as well as working towards Baildon becoming a dementia-friendly town.

In addition it supports people with dementia and their carers, and try to improve partnership working.

The group, which meets regularly, was nominated by Damian Fisher, Bradford Council’s Shipley area co-ordinator.

He said: “Members include those living with dementia and the group is seeking to extend knowledge and support to areas outside of Baildon, but within the Shipley constituency, including Windhill, Burley and Menston.

“Baildon Dementia Action Group was one of the first to be awarded a dementia-friendly sticker in recognition of their work towards making Baildon dementia-friendly.”

The group has recruited 60 dementia friends, organised talks at neighbourhood forums, has participated in the Dementia Friends network and Dementia Alliance meetings, and has organised a memory walk in Shipley Glen to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

In addition, a group Facebook page has been recently set up.

The Community Stars Awards are organised by the Telegraph & Argus and Bradford Council in a bid to ensure unsung heroes across the district are properly rewarded.

Nominations are being sought in the following categories: Volunteer, Good Neighbour, Community Group, Fundraiser, Community Champion and Young Active Citizen, as well as the new category of Better Start Bradford Outstanding Contribution.

Readers are being asked to nominate people in their local communities who they believe go the extra mile to help others.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, September 26, and these will be be whittled down by a panel of judges, before the public vote for their favourites from a shortlist which will be published in a special supplement in the T&A.

Category winners will be announced at a ceremony at The Midland Hotel, on December 7, where they will be presented with the prestigious Bradford Medal.
