The Young Active Citizen category is for a young person under 18 who has excelled in any of the other award categories.

Ben Brady

Ben has been attending youth sessions at Highcroft Youth centre for the past three years, and has been volunteering there for the last two of these. He has supported events which have targeted children and young people from across the district, including a ski visit to Aviemore, Halloween events at Blackhills Scout campsite and play camps.

He was nominated by Damian Fisher, Shipley Area Co-ordinator, at Bradford Council, who said: "Ben has sacrificed much of his own spare time to help with the development, enjoyment and learning of his peers and the wider community. He has a very positive and proactive attitude to life in general and this is demonstrated through his achievements with Bradford Youth Service and by his levels of commitment, creativity and confidence to be a role model for other young people within his community."

He added that on the ski trip to Aviemore Ben played a pivotal role in developing strong relationships with a group of young people who had severe learning disabilities.

"His commitment and self belief took his own learning, development and the impact on other young people to another level."

Black Heritage Youth Ambassadors

Since 2013 this group of young people have dedicated themselves to gathering information about the movers and shakers of the African and African Caribbean community in Bradford. they have worked tirelessly to plan, negotiate and interview older black people in the district to capture their stories within the first generation of these communities.

The purpose of this is to acclaim the heritage of this community and its contribution to the enrichment of Bradford.

George Deane of the Black Health Forum said in his nomination: "Within the process of carrying out this work they young people have paid tremendous attention to detail on how they conduct themselves and the interviews.

"They are a bright group of young people who have worked unstintingly hard evenings and weekends to support their community. They also worked throughout their holidays to support community events, clean up and tidy community centres and do some decorating. Throughout this they managed to complete their school work as required.

"Their tenacity has subsequently earned them the title of Bradford's Young African and African Caribbean Community Ambassadors, and is now seen as young leaders."

Tom Walsh

Tom works at People First Keighley & Craven as a volunteer and uses his time to campaign for equality for all people. He has spoken widely through the media to put the voice of disabled people on the agenda and to keep it there.

He also works at Bradford Talking Media volunteering to make information accessible.

He has campaigning since 2011 for a change in the law that allows private hire companies to charge people in wheelchairs more money when they use an adapted vehicle. Since he began campaigning on this issue, he has managed to raise awareness across the district, resulting in the priced being reduced.

Tom was nominated by People First, who said: "Tom never gives up hope and always works hard to ensure that all people with disabilities are treated equally by private hire companies.

"Tom uses a wheelchair and has other support needs but when he is campaigning he is working for all people.

"His ability to work professionally to influence positive change has ensured that this campaign is at the forefront of what is happening locally."
