THIS year’s Apprentice of the Year, Toby Crawshaw, is aiming for great heights.

The 22-year-old joined the Bradford Low Moor site of chemical company BASF, in 2016 as a warehouse apprentice and will complete his Level 2 apprenticeship in warehousing and storage this July.

During his apprenticeship he has met the requirements of the NVQ units by producing work of a superior standard and finished these well ahead of schedule.

Toby has continually taken personal accountability for his own development and this is demonstrated by his willingness to carry out new tasks to improve his knowledge and skills.

He has taken full responsibility for his on-the-job training log ensuring all new tasks are recorded and signed off by his mentor. This log reflects the daily tasks of a warehouse operator and demonstrates his competence to carry out these tasks.

His employers say of him: “Toby’s enthusiasm and energy is clearly visible whenever you speak to him and he is always keen to help and support others. “This is evident with the support he provides to one of the new warehouse apprentices.

“He acts as a role model and mentor to them by sharing his own knowledge and experience and always ensures he puts time aside to support them.

“He is a self-motived, driven individual and is keen to support the BASF apprenticeship programme whenever he can.

“He has volunteered to attend school career fairs and to attend the BASF open day to promote our programme and to share his experience with other students.”

Speaking after receiving his award he said: “I am over the moon to have won and it means a lot.

“I hope it will help me progress and climb the ladder within the company.

“It has been a real team effort with my colleagues pushing me so I am glad the hard work and commitment has paid off.”

The video showed him manoeuvring a fork lift truck which he did admit to having had a couple of accidents on, though he added the company was aware.
