Home Secretary Theresa May is to consider a letter from Bradford West MP George Galloway claiming a “dirty tricks operation” against him, involving a senior counter terrorism officer in the Metropolitan Police and a member of his constituency office staff.

The Respect MP alleges a campaign of vilification against him in his constituency, using police facilities and resources.

Meanwhile, West Yorkshire Police is investigating separate allegations by a Bradford woman who claims her car windscreen was smashed after she campaigned for rape victims, following the MP’s comments on consent.

The woman, said to be a constituent of the MP, told a national newspaper she decided to challenge Mr Galloway’s remarks and co-ordinate the Bradford About Consent campaign, including a demonstration and a Facebook events page. She claims that ten days after publicly giving her name as spokesman for the campaign, her car windscreen was smashed. She also complained to police about comments made on a social networking site.

Yesterday, a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A 32-year-old woman reported a hate-related incident to the police on September 26, involving damage to the windscreen of a vehicle parked in Bradford city centre. The incident is believed to have occurred between 4pm on September 22 and 2pm on September 23. Inquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for witnesses.”

The spokesman added: “We have received a complaint relating to comments made on a social networking site and we are currently investigating.”

Mr Galloway has written to the Home Secretary about his allegations concerning the counter-terrorism officer, saying: “I would ask you to look into this and let me know the result of your investigation.”

The MP said his member of staff, he would only name as Miss A, had been suspended. He added: “I have asked the Home Secretary Theresa May to act on this, and I have also written to the Met Police Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, and the Speaker of the House of Commons.”

A Home Office spokesman confirmed: “We have received a letter (from George Galloway) and it will be responded to in due course.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “We can confirm we received a complaint from a member of the public on October 15 with regard to the actions of an officer based within specialist operations. The matter has been passed to the MPS Directorate of Professional Standards to investigate and a voluntary referral is being made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. The officer has been placed on restricted duties pending the outcome of the investigation.”
