The Beeb’s sports personality of the year awards promises to be a must-see event for once.

Normally I can take or leave this annual back-slapping night in the build up to Christmas.

But the “great summer of sport” (copyright every sports broadcaster for the past month) has thrown up a long list of candidates for the top prize.

I’ve never been a fan of Andy Murray – or probably ever will – but he’s put himself right in the mix with Britain’s first tennis major for 76 years to add to an Olympic gold and reaching the final at Wimbledon.

That still may not be enough for him to win it though.

I don’t think you can look beyond Bradley Wiggins to make it back-to-back trophies for cyclists. And not just because he’s actually got a personality, unlike the aforementioned tennis player.

With all the Olympic hype and excitement followed by Murray’s success at Flushing Meadow, it’s easy to forget his Tour de France triumph.

But let’s put it in perspective. No Brit before had ever won the toughest race, not just in cycling but sport. And he followed that up with a time trial gold in London just over a week later ...

Mo Farah’s double was phenomenal and the trademark Mo-bot celebration will always go down well with the X Factor crowd. But he still shouldn’t pip Wiggo.

Murray and Farah would walk the prize any other year but for me it’s got to be the year of the sideburns.
