An investigation was under way yesterday after two bodies were found at a house in Haworth .

Officers stood guard outside a house in Ivy Bank Lane for much of the day and detectives were seen entering the property.

The bodies are believed to be those of a couple, understood to be elderly and well known in the village.

They had not been named by police last night.

The circumstances surrounding their deaths were also unknown.

Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Councillor Alan Watts, who lives nearby, said he had heard an ambulance travelling towards Ivy Bank Lane early yesterday.

He said: “At around 6.45am I heard an ambulance and first responder blazing down the road. I’m absolutely shocked by what’s happened. When I first heard I was stunned.”

Residents in Ivy Bank Lane said they had not been given any information by police regarding the investigation.

A police cordon was placed across the house and forensics officers were said to be carrying out investigations in a field nearby.

Graham Smith, writer and publisher of Voice of the Valleys, last night tweeted: “I can now confirm that a couple have been found dead at their home in Ivy Bank Lane, Haworth. Sadly they are well known to my wife, and to me, but I will not reveal their identities until it is done officially.

“The circumstances of their deaths have not yet been revealed but regardless it is a very sad day for their family and the village.”

West Yorkshire Police had not released any information about the incident last night.
