Lee Cannon is preparing to set the Halifax hills alive with singing when he plays the role of Captain Von Trapp in Halifax Amateur Operatic Society’s production of The Sound Of Music at the Victoria theatre Halifax this month.

Lee, who was brought up in Queensbury and now lives in Clayton, is playing his fourth role with HAOS, having previously played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Lank in Crazy for you and Lightoller in Titanic the Musical.

He said: “The best thing about playing Von Trapp is that it is different to what I’ve done before, usually taking comedy or serious parts.

“The romantic lead is different for me and it was hard at first not to laugh all the time because I am good friends with Becki Thompson (Maria) and usually all we do is laugh and goof around. The best thing about the part though is working with the kids, apart from all being brilliant they’re great little characters”.

He joined Bradford Youth Players at 17 and then moved to Bradford Catholic Players backstage, before moving on stage. After a break to play football, Lee returned to the stage with HAOS to play Jesus. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s score includes memorable songs such as Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss, The Lonely Goatherd, Sixteen, Farewell and The Sound Of Music.

The show at Halifax’s Victoria Theatre runs from from July 18-22, starting at 7.15pm, with a Saturday and Sunday matinee at 2.15pm. Tickets are available from (01422) 351158, or online at victoriatheatre.co.uk.
