A garage and an MG car went up in flames after a spark from a hammer and chisel ignited spilled petrol.

It happened as two men were trying to cut a scrapped Ford Fiesta in half - with hand tools.

The men managed to get out of the garage in York Street, Rastrick, Brighouse, as the fire spread destroying everything inside the building and reaching one of the men’s cars that was parked outside.

Crews from Brighouse and Elland were called to the garage at 8.20pm yesterday.

A fire service spokesman said: “They’d already stripped the car of all its innards and removed the fuel tank but petrol and spilled onto the floor and got mixed up with all the muck and rust already there. When they were back to finish it off they only had hand tools, that’s when a spark set it all off. They were incredibly lucky to get out of there it could have ended a lot worse.”
