The parents of a Keighley teacher who was the victim of a vicious attack in Thailand will have to re-mortgage their home and plunder their retirement savings to help cover the costs of his rehabilitation.

Andrew and Adele Pickles are taking the financial steps to help pay for the care of their son, former Bradford Grammar School pupil Adam, who remains in a coma in hospital, nearly two weeks after being flown home from Thailand by specialist air medics.

Adam, 40, who grew up in Riddlesden, suffered a setback this week when the stitches from his original operation became infected and required more surgery.

Before the blow, the father-of-one had been breathing unaided and making positive movements. He has yet to wake up from his coma – six weeks on from the attack in Pattaya that left him with a ten per cent chance of survival.

It is hoped money raised through the new mortgage and the couple’s retirement savings will help cover outstanding and likely care costs for Adam.

Although the global campaign has raised about £70,000, the Thai medical bill topped £57,000, while repatriation fees totalled £68,000.

Adam’s best friend Neil Clappison said: “Our goal for this campaign is to try and ensure Adam, his son Ben and his parents Andrew and Adele should not be out of pocket after everything they have gone through, lost and paid for in so many ways already. The huge sum of money they have already had to find just to keep Adam alive is simply not right, and his rehabilitation is going to be a long and hard road.

“He had a very reputable, well-respected job and a son to look after. This has been taken away from him through no fault of his own.”

Campaigners hope to raise money through an event, PickleAID, which takes place on Saturday and has inspired a host of auction pledges.

They include a signed international shirt from England Rugby World Cup winner Ben Kay.

Ben, who was capped 62 times for England and lifted the World Cup in 2003, said: “I was struck in equal measure by how unfair life can be and how loved Adam is. After reading other people’s stories about him, I felt like I almost knew him. It is brilliant to hear he is back on home soil, but his long road to recovery has just begun. Let’s hope with continued support it is both swift and complete.”

Ben, 36, enjoyed an illustrious career that saw him play in the 2003 and 2007 World Cups and tour with the British and Irish Lions.

His shirt joins a growing list of auction pledges to PickleAID, which takes place from 2pm at the Fullcircle Bespoke Design Emporium on Kirkstall Road, Leeds. A cue signed by snooker legend Ken Doherty will also go under the hammer.

An Adam Pickles Fancy Dress Fundraiser will take place at K2 nightclub, in High Street, Keighley, tomorrow before PickleAID.
