A police chief last night moved to reassure the public that his officers’ “full focus” was on tackling gun crime following another shooting in Bradford.

Six people escaped injury after shots were fired at a house yesterday.

Four women and two men were in the stone-built mid-terraced house when a gunman opened fire shortly before 2am.

Gunshot damage was caused to an upstairs bedroom window and the front door of the house in Merton Road, Great Horton, but no-one was hurt.

Detectives said it was a targeted attack and said reassurance patrols were being carried out in the area.

Police were called at 1:43am to reports of the property being damaged, and quickly ascertained it had been caused by a firearm. Officers are investigating the full circumstances of the incident and trying to establish what weapon was used, but it is believed to have been a handgun.

The house had a number of CCTV security cameras and detectives are reviewing those tapes for any evidence.

The street was sealed off by police yesterday, with officers guarding either end, while investigations continued. The damaged house was also taped off. A large bullet hole could be seen in the front upstairs bedroom window.

Detective Chief Inspector Dan Greenwood, in charge of crime and operations for the Bradford district, said yesterday: “We believe that this was an isolated incident and a targeted attack. Many of these types of offences involve individuals taking up their feuds with each other, often in relation to drugs. However, it simply will not be tolerated.

“There is a considerable amount of work ongoing to prevent and detect such incidents and I can assure the people of Bradford that our full focus is on apprehending those responsible.

“Neighbourhood officers will be patrolling the local area, speaking to residents and offering any support or reassurance they may require.

“We are working closely with our partners across the district in order to remove firearms from the streets. We also need the help of the public to tell us about those in the community who are involved in their use or possession.

“If you have information about this latest incident, or any information which could help us tackle the issue, please contact us on the non-emergency number 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

Residents spoke of their concerns over the incident yesterday. One woman living opposite the targeted house said: “I saw the police here when I woke up. I don’t know much about the people who live there, I think it is a family. I can’t think why this has happened. It is odd, and unsettling when you live here.”

Another woman said: “I am worried about this. I don’t feel very safe. There is always something happening.”
