A decision on the future of the size of the Yorkshire Regiment was expected to be announced in the latest round of defence cuts today.
The Regiment’s 3rd Battalion, historically known as the Duke of Wellington’s, is expected to be axed when Defence Secretary Philip Hammond makes the announcement in Parliament.
Mr Hammond is due to announce that the Army will be scaled back from 102,000 to 82,000 amid huge across-the-board cuts to public spending.
It is expected that three of the Yorkshire battalions will be cut to two – effectively cutting 3 Yorks – although a Yorkshire Warrior armoured force is expected to remain in some form at 3 Yorks base in Warminster.
