An MP has called for action to alleviate bottlenecks in Shipley amid fears the congestion will deter investors and businesses to the area.

Philip Davies said more and more houses are being built or given the go-ahead in his constituency but the infrastructure is not in place to support them.

The Conservative MP fears unless action is taken to resolve the problem the congestion will become worse and businesses will not want to move there.

Speaking in the Commons he called for transport ministers to carry out an assessment of the level of congestion in roads across the constituency.

He said: “Shipley constituency has some of the most congested roads not only in the Bradford district, but across West Yorkshire. Not least among those is the road between Baildon and Shipley.

“A Shipley Eastern Relief Road would not only help residents with that congestion but give a stimulus to economic growth across the Bradford district.”

Mr Davies urged Government to ensure the scheme gets funding from the Department for Transport.

But he was told by Transport Minister Normal Baker that, as part of the localism agenda, funding for major local authority schemes after 2015 will be devolved so the decision would be made by the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and West Yorkshire’s transport body.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Davies said: “The Council keep agreeing to more and more developments but we have no infrastructure to support it. We need investment to alleviate the problem and by taking the traffic away it will do wonders for the area. No business will want to operate from the area with these unacceptable levels of congestion residents suffer.”

A Bradford Council spokesman said: “We are working with our partners within the Leeds City Region and West Yorkshire to identify which major transport and highway schemes should receive investment.”
