We are the champions! Pupils at Hollingwood Lane Primary School got to try on the jackets worn by the last Bradford Dukes speedway team which competed in The Elite League Championship in 1997.

They were brought in to the Bradford school by speedway enthusiast John Murphy to teach pupils some of the city’s sporting history and to promote the exhibition he is staging on Bradford Speedway at the Bradford Industrial Museum from August to September.

Mr Murphy, 53, of Buttershaw, also brought in a bike loaned for the occasion.

The jackets will be going up for auction at the end of the exhibition, with the proceeds going to help former Dukes rider and now wheelchair-bound Garry Stead and Gary Havelock, a Bradford speedway legend who is recovering after suffering broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken shoulder and a bleed on the brain. He came off his bike at a race meeting in Redcar on March 22.
