More than 10,000 pupils from across the district are to take part in a day of music, art and dance at Odsal Stadium to celebrate the Olympics.

The Bradford District Schools Sports and Cultural Olympiad, hosted by children’s entertainer Barney Harwood on Monday will include a Zumba world record attempt, RAF parachute display and fly-past, banner parade and singing.

An RAF parachutist will also take pictures of the pitch covered in bedsheets decorated with Olympic-themed pictures by pupils.

Thousands of youngsters will also be involved in a series of sports and cultural events at the stadium throughout the remainder of the week. They include percussion and sculpture workshops, a sports challenge and music, art and dance carousel.

Four primary and four secondary schools will work with Southbank Sinfonia Orchestra, which supported last year’s Mega Music Day at Valley Parade, and composer Barry Russell on a composition and film project inspired by the Olympics.

Councillor Ralph Berry, executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “This week of events is impressive and will provide an opportunity for thousands of children and young people from across the Bradford district to take part in a big event. Schools have been preparing for this for weeks and we are looking forward to seeing many quality performances.”

Schools taking part include Fagley Primary where pupils rehearsed Zumba routines and singing and painted bedsheets on Wednesday.

Tony Johnson, the Council’s head of music and arts, said: “This will be a spectacular week of events celebrating the Olympics and will once again bring together thousands of children and young people from across the Bradford district.

“Last year’s Mega Sing at Valley Parade was such a huge success which went down really well with schools which took part. With this year’s figures exceeding 10,000 it will be a memorable and fantastic day for the children and young people involved celebrating the 2012 Olympics.”
