More than 1,000 schoolchildren will be taking part in a parade which forms part of special events to mark the arrival of the Olympic flame tomorrow.

The torch relay is set to arrive in in Brighouse before arriving in Bradford and going from Manchester Road, through City Park and out to Lister Park in Manningham, before heading through Keighley, on to Skipton and then to Ilkley.

Bradford Council is providing free entertainment for crowds from 1pm in City Park and Lister Park where mini-sports will be on offer, as well as supporting other activities in Ilkley and Keighley. A day-long party has been organised in Keighley to coincide with the Olympic torch travelling through the town.

Children across the district have made their own Olympic torches and banners in preparation for the big day, when 35 schools will take part in a parade around City Park.

They will be joined by a 200-strong ensemble brass band made up of musicians from dozens of bands across the district, along with a host of other entertainment and a visit by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Dale Smith. Crowds will also be able to watch the progress of the torch relay on the BBC Big Screen in Centenary Square.

In Lister Park a family-friendly day of sporting activities is due to take place in anticipation of the torch passing through.

Activities will include mini- Olympic sport taster sessions, body zorbing, rebound shoe jumping, play tunnels, surf simulator, an inflatable football stadium, tri-golf, space hoppers and giant board games. Olympics-related crafts will also be staged, including Olympic torch, garland, head wreath, mascot and medal-making.

The Wharfedale Activity Group, which is supported by the Council, will be hosting an Olympic-themed sports competition at Ghyll Royd School in Burley in Wharfedale, with teams invited from Ilkley, Addingham, Menston and Burley.

And in Keighley singers, dancers and other entertainers can strut their stuff on stage in The Square, behind Keighley bus station from 11am. Budding entrepreneurs can take a table in the Airedale Centre to display their wares and services alongside 50 other businesses and organisations who are all working together to get young Keighley people back to work under the Our Town, Our Future, Our Voice initiative, a multi-agency partnership led by the Council.

The relay will start on the A64 Huddersfield Road at Brighouse, shortly before 12.30pm, and will go along Halifax Road ending at Hove Edge. Then at about 2.40pm, the torch will arrive in Bradford, starting on Manchester Road, before passing across City Park’s mirror pool, out of the city centre and along Manningham Lane and Keighley Road to Lister Park at about 3.20pm, finishing at Emm Lane.

The next stop is Keighley. The torch will arrive at the junction of South Street and Worth Way at 3.40pm, finishing near the Skipton Road roundabout. Shortly after 4pm, it will be in Skipton and head into the town centre along Keighley Road. It will then go up one side of the High Street and back down the other, before finishing at the second junction with Princes Crescent.

The torch will arrive in Ilkley at about 4.45pm on Skipton Road near the junction with Victoria Avenue.

It will go into the town centre along Church Street and Leeds Road, before stopping near Booths supermarket.

It will be day 37 of the flame’s 70- day tour around the UK, which stops at more than 1,000 communities on its way to London. Lit in Greece, the Olympic Flame arrived in the UK on May 18 before setting out the next day on the relay. It will be carried by 8,000 torchbearers. It will end its journey as the last torchbearer lights the cauldron at the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, marking the official start of the Games on July 27.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s executive member for sport and leisure, said: “It promises to be a wonderful, familyfriendly day in Bradford, Keighley and Ilkley.

“The entertainment being provided in City Park and Lister Park should create a great atmosphere ahead of the arrival of the Olympic Torch Relay.

“It will be a proud moment for the district to welcome the Olympic Flame and should be one that lives long in the memory of everyone who attends.”

To ensure the flame passes through smoothly, the Council will impose parking restrictions from 6am on the day and road closures about 30 minutes before the torch arrives.

The authority is urging as many people as possible to walk or travel by public transport to ease congestion.
