A single yellow line which has left residents of a Bradford street feeling like “sitting ducks” because they cannot park outside their homes for fear of attracting a parking fine is being removed by Bradford Council.

Father-of-five Mohammed Khan, of Dirkhill Road, Great Horton, had told the Telegraph & Argus that a 40ft yellow line appeared after the road was resurfaced five years ago.

Restrictions prevent parking on it for an hour-and-a-half in the morning and two hours in the evening.

But now the fear of fines will become a thing of the past after the Council meeting of the Bradford West Area Committee agreed last night to spend £10,000 on tackling area-wide traffic regulation orders including the “review of waiting restrictions” on Dirkhill Road, which includes the removal of the yellow line.

Mr Khan, speaking before the Council decision, said that he was told that the line had been installed to allow for a bus service, but he said the bus which used to run up the road stopped three years ago.

He has been given two parking tickets for leaving his car on the line during the restricted times.

“We live here, I can’t move anywhere,” he said. “There’s nowhere else for me to park my car. We feel harassed, we can’t live in our home in peace. This is supposed to be helping the community in terms of parking but they are deliberately targeting us. That’s how we feel.”

He added: “We want them to address the issue and talk to us as residents.

“It’s causing us a lot of stress, there’s nowhere for us to park our cars, we are sitting ducks, where do we go?”

Mr Khan’s neighbour Tahir Arif said: “I got a ticket on my car when I was parked outside my house the day before yesterday. It is an ongoing issue, we’ve had this happening for a long time now.

“They are targeting the residents, the line shouldn’t be there. We want the line moved it is just a nuisance.”

Speaking after the decision last night, Mr Khan said that he was pleased that the cash had been earmarked, but urged the Council to let residents know when the line was being removed because they still feared being given parking fines.
