A Bradford-based human rights charity is launching an £18,000 appeal to buy two ambulances for Syria.

Basic Human Rights (BHR), in Sunbridge Road, is working with Syrian doctors and nurses to provide life-saving medical care and relief inside the conflict-stricken Homs district.

Over the past 15 months, the UN estimates at least 9,000 people have died in violence, thousands have been injured and tens of thousands of civilians have been forced to flee their homes looking for safety inside Syria and neighbouring countries.

Now BHR’s founder and chief executive officer Anjum Tahirkheli is calling on Bradfordians to dig deep to raise the funds needed.

“Times are hard for all of us and I know many people in Bradford are worried about their jobs, about paying bills, but I also know what a generous and warm community we are. We are looking to raise £18,000 to buy two ambulances for Syria and to let the women, children and men of Syria know they are not forgotten. We know they are suffering, and as a community we want to try and alleviate that suffering.”

The mother-of-four from Bingley is in regular contact with doctors and medical workers inside Syria snd says the situation over there is critical.

Basic Human Rights is working with Nottingham-based medical charity Hand in Hand for Syria (HIHS) to get aid and medical equipment inside Syria.

HIHS is the only organisation running ten field hospitals in Syria’s worst conflict area.
