People in Bradford are being urged to use social media sites on Sunday to get the latest information as the Olympic Torch Relay winds its way through the district.

The flame will take in Brighouse, before arriving in Bradford, then head through Keighley, on to Skipton and then to Ilkley. Thousands of people are expected to line the route, and entertainment will be provided for the crowds in City Park and Lister Park.

Real-time updates will be provided by Bradford Council on its Facebook and Twitter accounts as the torch comes through the district. They will be using the hashtag #bradfordtorch on Twitter so people know which messages relate specifically to what is happening in the district.

As well as receiving practical advice about issues that may arise on the day, such as road congestion or where best to see the torch, the Council is also encouraging people to share their pictures and comments as the excitement unfolds.

Bradford Council’s Facebook page is fb.com/bradfordmdc and the Twitter account is twitter.com/bradfordmdc.

Events will begin in City Park and Lister Park, Bradford, from 1pm, with the torch relay due to arrive in the city centre around 2.40pm. It then passes through Keighley from about 3.40pm, Skipton shortly after 4pm, and in Ilkley at 4.45pm.

It will be day 37 of the flame’s 70-day tour around the UK, which is stopping at more than 1,000 communities on its way to London and the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Games at the Olympic Stadium on July 27.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, the Council’s executive member for sport and leisure, said: “It promises to be a terrific day, and using our social media accounts will allow us to share it in real-time with everyone.

“We will be giving out practical advice and updates about the progress of the Torch or where to see it next, so people can get the latest information from their mobile phones.

“During the City Park launch event in March we gave updates throughout the day and shared pictures and comments from people there on the day, which proved a great success.”

* Six people across the Bradford district, including the man behind turning around the fortunes of Salts Tennis Club, and a 17-year-old rugby player, were among the torchbearers carrying the Olympic flame on its second day in Yorkshire yesterday. John Bretherick, 45, of Ilkley, carried the flame through Wetherby in the morning, while Bradford Academy pupil Lewis Birkinshaw was handed the flame in Ripon, near Fountains Abbey, in the afternoon. The torch relay, which will reach Bradford on Sunday, began the day in Hull and ended in York. Other torchbearers from the district were David Niblock, 30, of Bradford, and schoolgirl Danielle Bailey, of Otley, who both carried the flame in Knaresborough; Anita Adams, 33, of Buttershaw, who bore the torch in Harrogate; and former showjumper Harvey Smith, of High Eldwick, Bingley, who took up the torch in York. More people from the district were taking part today as the 70-day relay heads from York through Thirsk and Richmond, before ending the day in Carlisle
