A healthcare assistant, a chairman of governors, a former T&A journalist and a screen star are among those listed in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Pat Connell, healthcare assistant at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been made an MBE for services to the NHS.

And Brent Fitzpatrick, chairman of governors at Phoenix Special School, Keighley, has also been awarded the MBE for services to education.

Former T&A journalist Ian Hargreaves has been awarded a CBE for services to the creative economy and higher education.

And actress Jenny Agutter, star of the classic 1970 Railway Children film, which was shot on the Worth Valley line, said she was “thrilled and touched” for her charity work to be recognised with an OBE.

Tasmin Little, violinist, daughter of Bradford-born actor George Little, has been awarded the OBE for services to music and Stephen Beckley, deputy chief fire officer, director of operations at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services has been awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal, given for distinguished service.

Mrs Connell, 64, of Bradford, has worked at Bradford Royal Infirmary for 23 years and is a healthcare assistant on ward one and is one of the medical unit’s most valued members of staff. She was nominated for the honour by senior sisters Jane Palmer and Sonya Tetley, for being an inspirational role model and her tireless hands-on work.

Chief Executive, Bryan Millar, said: “I am delighted that Pat has been recognised nationally for her unstinting service to the patients of Bradford Teaching Hospitals over the past two decades.

“She is kind, compassionate, hard-working, loyal, trustworthy and an inspiration to all who come into contact with her – be it patients or health care professionals alike.”

He added: “Everyone loves Pat and she has rare qualities that make her deeply valued by her colleagues.”

Brent Fitzpatrick, chairman of governors at Phoenix and also Merlin Top Primary School in Keighley, has worked tirelessly as a school governor since 1972, supporting 13 schools in the district as a chairman of governors. He also sits on a range of committees and focus groups in respect of education.

Head teacher of Phoenix School, Gary Bowden, said the honour was richly deserved. “He has done sterling work for years and years on the governing bodies of several schools in Bradford,” he said.

“I am so pleased because he is always so steadfast, supportive and enthusiastic. I could not have wished for a better chairman of governors.”

Former T&A journalist Ian Hargreaves began his career as a reporter at the Keighley News and after leaving he T&A held senior editorial and management posts at the Financial Times, the BBC, the Independent and the New Statesman. He is now Professor of Digital Economy at Cardiff University and last year produced the Hargreaves Review on how to improve intellectual property rights for the Government.

Jenny Agutter has been a much-loved figure on screen for more than 40 years, but has been honoured for her charitable work.

She works with a number of organisations including the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, ovarian cancer charity Ovacome and Action For Children.

The 59-year-old said: “I’m obviously thrilled and touched that people I’ve been working with from the charities have recommended me – and the fact that it has been taken up.

“I got the official brown envelope, opened it up and I was very happy to accept.”

Taunton-born Jenny spent her childhood living in numerous different countries, according to her Army officer father’s deployments.

Returning to the UK, she trained at ballet school and landed a role in Disney’s film Ballerina, then at 14 was cast in a BBC serialisation of The Railway Children.

Steve Beckley, awarded the Queen’s Fire Medal, took up his current position as Deputy Chief Fire Officer at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2008.

West Yorkshire’s chief fire officer, Simon Pilling: “This is a well-deserved honour for a highly respected colleague who has served with great distinction in two of the UK’s largest metropolitan brigades. Steve is a remarkably dedicated officer who believes in leading by example and I am extremely fortunate to have him in my leadership team.”
