Bingley Little Theatre is turning to the gentle humour of HE Bates’s Larkin family for its next production.
The society’s 64th season closes with The Darling Buds Of May, telling the story of the Larkin family, who live in rural bliss.
Julian Freeman takes on the role of Pop Larkin, who makes his fortune from various deals, and always without paying income tax. He lives an idyllic life with his big-hearted wife, Ma, (Helen Clarke) and their six children. When earnest tax official Mr Charlton (Anthony Morton) turns up one hot May afternoon to investigate, he’s bewitched by eldest daughter Mariette (Nikola Morrison) and soon he succumbs to the boisterous Larkin family charm.
Sisters Primrose and Victoria are played by real life sisters Molly and Saffron Ingham, while Martha Edwards plays Victoria on three nights.
Director Jan Darnbrough says: “I love this play; a warm-hearted, gentle comedy which harks back to my childhood in the 1950s. It has been a joy to direct.”
Little Theatre stalwart Jan is a former chairman of the society. Since BLT took over the running of Bingley Arts Centre, she has been the office manager.
Bingley Little Theatre’s The Darling Buds Of May runs at Bingley Arts Centre from June 25 to 30. For tickets, ring (01274) 519814.
