A Bradford sports charity for people with disabilities has teamed up with the organisers of this year’s Skyride.

For the first time Bradford Council, British Cycling and Sky are working with Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure to help people with disabilities join in the mass participation event on Sunday, July 1.

The charity will be ensuring a range of adapted bikes from trikes to tandems will be available at the event, which is introducing a new route this year which includes City Park and Lister Park.

The charity’s sports development officer Dean Carroll said: “This is a really exciting year for our charity with it being the year of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, and also being invited to take an active part in this year’s Skyride.

“It is a great opportunity for our members and any other members of the community who have disabilities to take part in this mass event.”

The 27-year-old charity houses 25 bikes at its base in Lister Park, which they will be offering to people with disabilities who want to take part in Sky ride.

It has more than 400 members across the district who can enjoy a wide range of sports and activities including football, basketball, rugby, swimming and weightlifting, as well as cycling.

Councillor Andrew Thornton, the Council’s executive member for environment, sport and sustainability, said: “The theme of this year’s event is ‘everyone’s invited’ and we are truly making that possible by joining forces with Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure.”

The charity’s clubs run all year round and every day of the week from 4pm to 5pm for all ages.

The charity also organises sporting academies specifically for young people in special schools.

In association with Skride, British Cycling ride leaders organise a whole range of Local Rides to cater for all levels of abilities.

They are called Ride Easy, Ride Steady, Ride Strong and Ride Well, covering a variety of distances, speeds and challenges. They take place across the district including Shipley, Keighley and Ilkley.

This year people with disabilities are also invited to take part in the specifically inclusive Local Rides.

Local Rides that are taking place this weekend include a leisurely women-only Breeze ride today from 10.30am, from Saltaire to Rodley Nature Reserve. Tomorrow, there is a Ride Steady called Saddle up to Saltaire. Starting at 2pm, it is a nine mile route that starts and finished at Apperley Bridge.

The inclusive rides will run regularly on all the Lister Park and the Spen Valley Greenway rides throughout the summer with the next ride on Sunday, June 24.
