One of the world’s most iconic fish and chip restaurants got back on its feet in fine style today.

The original Harry Ramsden's restaurant, which opened in 1931 at White Cross, Guiseley, was re-launched under the ownership of the Wetherby Whaler group, at a special event.

Among the 125 guests to sample some of the new fish and chips were Harry Ramsden’s daughter and granddaughter, who gave new owners Philip and Janine Murphy their seal of approval.

Mr and Mrs Murphy, who run the Wetherby Whaler with more than 200 employees in four branches in Wetherby, Pudsey, York and Wakefield, have spent £500,000 on refurbishing the building and have promised to return it to its glory days.

“We hope people like what we have done and we’ve had the blessing from the Ramsden family and I even think Harry is looking down on us as we meet here today,” Mr Murphy said.

The Wetherby Whaler is open to the public from 11.30am tomorrow.
