Invitations to Skipton’s giant Diamond Jubilee street party will soon be landing on doormats across the town.

Everyone in Skipton is to be invited along to help celebrate 60 years of the Queen’s reign on Sunday, June 3.

The High Street will be turned into a huge arena with live coverage of what’s going on in London together with footage of past jubilees.

The massive television screen will also show family favourites The Lion King and Mamma Mia and there will be live bands, a funfair, food and a licensed bar.

A royal enclosure will be created with tables and chairs to hire with food and drink delivery service laid on and there will be a chance for people to have their photo taken on a special royal throne or alongside larger than life Royal Guardsmen.

Shops will be open as usual and community groups are being invited to come along with stalls to raise awareness and money.

A jubilee beacon will burn for half an hour on the top of the Holy Trinity Church tower as one of 2,012 being lit across the country.

It is hoped the event – organised by Skipton Town Council’s town centre management team with support from the Skipton Business Improvement District – will be even more popular than last year’s royal wedding day.

Brett Butler, town centre manager, said “Last year’s wedding event had a fantastic atmosphere and we really hope that even more people will join us on the High Street to create a real party atmosphere.”

Town council chief officer Dave Parker said a lot of work had gone into preparing the event.

“We’re sure Skipton will want to celebrate in style,” he said. “We know people will love to watch the archive footage and live coverage of the events in London.”

The event will kick off at 10am and run right through to 10pm.

Any group interested in having a stall should contact Robin Armour at the town council on 01756 794357.
