Northern Ballet brings the Roaring Twenties to life with new performances of Gershwin extravaganza I Got Rhythm.
Bradford dancer Lori Gilchrist will be among the dancers bringing Gershwin’s music to life at the Grand Theatre, Leeds, from May 23 to 26.
Choreographed by Northern Ballet’s artistic director David Nixon, I Got Rhythm is a two-act programme of “skilful and exuberant dance, live music and singing”, set to some of George and Ira Gershwin’s most enduring popular songs including Rhapsody In Blue, Summertime and Girl Crazy.
Northern Ballet Sinfonia performs big band-style on stage. Alongside the company’s dancers will be guest singers Robert Winslade Anderson and Simone Sauphanor and concert pianist Grant Green.
“The American obsession with Gershwin inspired me to create I Got Rhythm. This production challenges dancers to move in a different way and our Sinfonia to play in a different way,” says David.
“It offers the opportunity for each and every dancer to shine, and showcases the talents of the Sinfonia, who are often unsung heroes at the ballet. This is an evening of celebration and fun with an ensemble of dancers who are inspiring to work with and to watch.”
