A group offering support to young carers has been given a funding boost.

The Young Carers project was launched through The Edge, a young people’s project on Holme Wood estate, as a year-long pilot last year in partnership with children’s charity Barnardo’s.

Adam Woodhouse, senior youth worker with The Edge, set up more than a decade ago through the Holme Christian Community, has announced that it has secured £24,000 over two years from Lloyds TSB.

The money will secure Mr Woodhouse’s post, enabling him to run the young carers project, but he is still seeking support for his role with The Edge project.

Adam, and the youngsters who benefit from The Edge’s activities and drop-in sessions, have launched a range of fundraising initiatives such as getting people from the local community to fill sweet tubes with coins. Thirteen-year-old Conor Lister donated his pocket money, kickstarting a campaign called Conor’s Coins.

The organisation has also secured funding for another year through the Rank Foundation.

“It means I can focus my time on working with the young carers and devote half my time working with the young people at The Edge, helping them access better opportunities and support,” said Mr Woodhouse.
