Ward councillors have objected to an application by a shop in Idle to extend its licence to sell alcohol from 6am to 11pm seven days a week.

The Co-op Late Shop on Bradford Road, Thorpe Garth, is currently allowed to sell alcohol from 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 10.30pm on Sundays.

It also operates reduced hours on Good Friday from 8am to 10.30pm and on Christmas Day from noon to 3pm and 7pm to 10.30pm.

Designated premises supervisor Richard Varley has said the store operates a CCTV system, burglar alarm and panic button for staff.

In addition staff operate a Challenge 25 scheme, an age refusals register, and there is an electronic till prompt when alcohol is scanned to remind staff to check the age of the purchaser.

No deliveries would take place between 11pm and 6am the following day.

However Liberal Democrat councillors representing Idle and Thackley, Jeanette Sunderland, Alun Griffiths and Chris Reid, have objected to the extension.

In a letter to Bradford Council’s licensing team they state: “It is a residential area with a lot of older people and elderly people’s homes and it would be totally inappropriate for the store to open at 6am and stay open until 11pm seven days a week.

“We feel that extending the hours in which alcohol can be purchased will exacerbate any Anti-social behaviour present in the nearby residential area.”

In addition Councillor Sunderland told the Telegraph & Argus: “Anti-social behaviour has been a problem in the past and a lot of people are very anxious about any changes to hours of opening and longer hours in which people can purchase alcohol.

“It’s in nobody’s interest for people to be able to buy alcohol at six o’clock in the morning.”

The application will be considered at the Council’s Bradford, Keighley and Shipley Licensing Panel on Tuesday at 2pm in City Hall, Bradford.
