A school’s version of the X Factor, a multi-coloured front door and a hike across Yorkshire’s Three Peaks are all raising money to pay for specialist treatment for a Wharfedale girl.

A fun day at Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley is the latest community event to raise money for Eve’s Journey.

Stalls, fun, games and a version of the X Factor – the PHGS Factor – were organised by Prince Henry’s students to raise money for two good causes.

The Eve’s Journey Trust Fund was established by the Williams family, of Menston, to send their seven-year-old daughter, Eve, to America for life-changing surgery. Eve has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which makes it difficult for her to move around unaided.

But it is hoped that selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery at the world-renowned St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri, coupled with several years of physiotherapy, could help her walk and give her the best chance of leading a fully independent life.

The family initially set out to raise £70,000 for the surgery this summer and physiotherpy in future.

However, they raised their fundraising goal to £100,000, having already collected £57,000 from a variety of events and donations.

Eve was chosen as a beneficiary of fundraising at Prince Henry’s Grammar this year, along with charity Help for Heroes.

Eve’s mother, Gina, teaches at the school, while father David said fundraising events at the school so far have included a cake sale, fun run, and a spot of throwing sponges at a teacher.

A Menston resident, meanwhile, came up with a novel and eye-catching way of raising money for Eve, by painting his door in bright colours.

He put two tins in the village bakery, inviting residents to “vote” in the form of a donation if they want him to keep the design, or return the door to a more traditional colour scheme.

Mr Williams says many local people have contributed since fundraising began around four months ago.

He said: “Fundraising has been fantastic, from huge anonymous donations to friends’ kids baking cakes, the range of support has been great.”

Several tickets for a charity ball at Hollins Hall, on April 27, are still available, and the family are still looking for walkers to take part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks walk on May 19.
