A celebration of the humble spud is taking place in Saltaire today.

West Yorkshire Organic Group is holding its annual Potato Day at the exhibition hall, introducing visitors to more than 40 varieties.

They include some from the Savari Trust in Wales – a specialist breeder of blight-resistant varieties of potatoes.

A spokesman for the group said the reason they host the annual event is the potato is one of our top vegetables.

“Everybody loves chips, mash. It is a staple food for so many parts of the world and the benefits of Potato Day is you can get all the varieties you would not get in the shops.”
