Keighley’s MP is backing a campaign spearheaded by Sir Richard Branson to give more support to promising entrepreneurs.

Kris Hopkins met Sir Richard and representatives from the Virgin Media Pioneers programme to discuss the idea of turning the Student Loans Fund into a Youth Investment Fund.

This would then offer loans at favourable rates to provide start-up capital for young entrepreneurs, as well as offering loans to prospective students.

Following the meeting Mr Hopkins said: “Getting young people into work is a huge priority for me at the moment and I want to explore every positive avenue that might assist in achieving this.

“Setting up your own business is a daunting prospect for anyone but I have no doubt that the creativity and ideas are out there. Virgin Media Pioneers’ campaign for a Youth Investment Fund has come from young entrepreneurs themselves keen not to be forgotten and asking for support.

“I am delighted to back the campaign and will actively work with ministers with the aim of turning the proposal into positive results for young people in Keighley and Ilkley.”

Sir Richard said: “While global economic gloom has closed the door to many young people who might have entered into traditional professions, thousands of them are looking upon this as an opportunity.”
