Yorkshire cricket club aces joined Bradford City legends for a charity football match in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for two worthy causes.

Cricketer Anthony McGrath and his Yorkshire team mates made up a Celebrity Legends X1, also including former Bradford City stars Dean Windass and Wayne Jacobs, who played against Field FC at their ground in Hollingwood Lane, Lidget Green.

The 36-year-old batsman organised the event with Fields FC player Trevor Parr to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Bradford-based Brain Tumour Research and Support charity, previously Andrea’s Gift.

Mr Parr organised the match in memory of his late cousin, Tina Wormald, who lost a battle with cancer, and in tribute to the bravery of another cousin, Karen Williams, who has just completed a treatment to remove a brain tumour. Karen, 53, of Hollingwood Lane, was cheering on from the sidelines at yesterday’s match.

She said: “It has been absolutely out of this world. I’m so proud of them all for giving up their time.”

Tina’s mum and dad, Peter and Beryl Atkinson, of St Abbs Walk, Odsal, and her daughter 17-year-old Emily Wormald, were also at the match as guests of honour.

They watched a host of McGrath’s Yorkshire colleagues line up on a frosty pitch as Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe kicked off the match. And it was the sports stars who eventually won the day, beating Fields FC legends 7 - 4.

Anthony McGrath said: “It has been great but a bit icy. Trevor told me the pitch was like Wembley – it was a bit more like Wembley ice rink!”

Ryan Sidebottom added: “When you are playing cricket, you are often in your own little bubble, so it is fantastic to get out and play football, especially to support such worthy causes.”

Proceeds from the match will be added to money raised at a charity auction on January 28, when signed football shirts and boots will be auctioned off to raise even more money. For more information about the event, contact the club on 01274 571750.
