A 30-year-old man raped a confused and crying woman who was lost and alone on a night out in Bradford, a jury was told.

The 21-year-old woman from Skipton was assaulted in Croscombe Walk, Little Horton, after she became separated from her friend, it is alleged.

John Cawley, of Hazelhurst Road, Daisy Hill, Bradford, denies orally raping her in the early hours of August 19 last year.

Prosecution barrister, Matthew Bean, told Bradford Crown Court yesterday that sexual activity between Cawley and the woman was not in doubt. The issue for the jury to determine was whether it was consensual.

Mr Bean said the woman and her friend travelled from Skipton by train to Bradford, arriving at 7pm.

They went to visit a man in Hapsberg Court, Little Horton, but he was not at home.

Mr Bean said the women returned to the city centre and went to a pub and on to Flares nightclub at 11pm.

It was there that they met up with Cawley and his brother, whom they had never seen before.

At about 1am, the four took a taxi to Bolinbroke Court, Little Horton, but the alleged victim got out to go to the toilet and became separated from her friend.

Mr Bean said she was alone with Cawley. She walked away and when he followed she panicked and shouted for help.

The jury was told she pushed him away when he tried to kiss her and then he forced her to commit the sex act.

Mr Bean alleged she was crying and managed to break free.

“She was confused and afraid and alone and did not know where she was,” he said.

A man saw them go into a flat in Bolinbroke Court. He knocked on the door, got the woman out and called the police.

Mr Bean said officers arrived at 5am and Cawley was arrested later that day.

He told the police he had met the woman that night and the sex was consensual.

The trial continues.
