The founder of one of the world’s longest running weekly folk clubs has died aged 88.

Alex Eaton, who started up the Topic Club in Bradford in 1956 at the height of the Cold War as an opportunity for like-minded youths to get together, talk politics and sing, passed away peacefully at his home last week.

Family and friends will gather at Nab Wood Crematorium on Thursday to say their final farewells.

Mr Eaton, formerly of Saltaire, leaves a wife Louise, whose Day of Dance events in the village have raised thousands of pounds for Oxfam and CND over the years. He also leaves five children, 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Topic archivist Trevor Charnock paid tribute to the club founder. He said: “Folk music in Bradford owes a lot to Alex and his friends.

“It’s a tribute to him the club is still thriving 55 years later, it’s his legacy.”
