Villagers are in for a big screen treat next weekend when their 12th century church becomes home to a community cinema.
St Wilfrid’s Church in Calverley has joined up with a community project called Creative Calverley to ‘reel in’ locals’ imagination and boost village spirit.
Voting sheets in shops and other meeting places asked people to tick the film they most wanted to see for the cinema’s first screening.
The winner, with 91 votes, was the classic It’s a Wonderful Life, followed by Miracle on 34th Street with 61 votes and Bing Crosby’s White Christmas with 54 votes.
Vicar John Walker said: “It’s going to be a unique experience. How many people get to watch movies in a 12th century church. The only down-side could be the pews – we’re advising people to bring their own cushions.”
The community cinema’s first screening will be at 7pm on Saturday, December 3. Tickets cost £4 on the night.
