Infamous Bradford band the Psycho Surgeons will be playing their first gig in five years at Bradford’s 1 in 12 Club on November 12.

The band, mixing hard-hitting political messages with a wild, theatrical stage show, were one of the most memorable bands to emerge from Bradford’s lively alternative music scene in the 1980s and 1990s.

With the death of singer-songwriter Wild Willi Beckett in 2007, Psycho fans believed they had seen the band play for the last time. But in February this year, Gary Kaye, a band fan and friend of Wild Willi, contacted other band members to suggest a comeback.

He said: “It’s the 30th anniversary of the 1-in-12 Club this year, so it seemed a nice time to do it. Other gigs are planned. We are looking to get on the festival circuit next year.

“Wild Willi came up with the band’s name because he had a long-standing interest in psychiatry. The band’s philosophy was they are surgeons of the psyche.”

The line-up is Gary Kaye, singer; Stan Greenwood, guitar; Dave Fields, bass; and Rob Kershaw, drums.

“It is not without a little irony that songs that Willi wrote 20 years ago are probably more relevant now than ever before.

“He was a great talent and a great man and I just thought his music should live on.

“Willi’s shoes are big ones to fill but I think I have the same passion and the same gregarious personality. This is not just a pale imitation; the gigs will be every bit as wild and wonderful as they were back in the band’s heyday.

“I’m thrilled now to be on stage singing the songs that formed part of my musical education,” Mr Kaye added.

The 1-in-12 Club is located in Albion Street, on Goitside, off Grattan Road.

The Psycho Surgeons will be supported by the Leeds-based band The Wonderbluff. Tickets cost £5 on the door. The show starts at 8pm.
