A Bradford primary school has been selected from more than 7,000 schools to be honoured for its work around the upcoming London Olympics.

Springwood Primary School, Manningham, is the first school in Yorkshire to be named Olympic School of the Month by the national organising body for the London games.

The school is part of a programme called Get Set, which is built around seven “Olympic and Paralympic values”. They are respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality.

It has been recognised for its outstanding commitment to reflecting the values in creative and innovative ways.

Springwood was chosen after blog entries were submitted by pupils and for holding assemblies based on the values.

Also commended by organisers was the school’s girls’ boxing club, which is part of the Bradford Police and College Boxing Academy's outreach programme.

Headteacher Fran Warden said: “The pupils, parents, governors and staff are all fully committed to living the Olympic and Paralympic values.

“We have found that the focus on these values gives our pupils a framework for developing their citizenship skills and supports them in respecting all members of our diverse local community.”

Last year Springwood Primary pupils went to London to see the Olympic site being developed and they have met Lord Sebastian Coe, the chairman of the London Olympics Committee.

PE coordinator Luke Swift said: “During the past two years, we have been increasing the awareness of London 2012 with staff, pupils, and the community by organising events and creating displays to mark significant dates. We are both proud and privileged to receive such an accolade from the national organising group.”
