A grandmother will be at a gala day collecting names for her petition to protect quad bike riders from head injuries.
Pam Teale is determined to get a change in the law to make the wearing of helmets compulsory after the tragic death of her grandson Jake Leahy, who was 16.
Jake suffered brain injuries when the bike, which he had been illegally riding without lights, collided with a car at a junction in Bierley House Avenue, Bradford, in November 2009.
Last month, at an inquest into Jake’s death, Acting Bradford Coroner Professor Paul Marks recorded a verdict of accidental death and said he would write to Transport Minister Philip Hammond pressing for a change in the law to make helmets compulsory for quad bikers.
Jake’s grandmother, who lives in Woodside, Bradford, said: “We hope we can do something to stop other families suffering the agony we are feeling without Jake.”
Mrs Teale will be at the charity gala day at Wetwoodpark Sports Club, in Clayton Heights, on Monday, August 29, collecting signatures.
