A new TV comedy starring Jane Horrocks was originally set in Bradford, where the show’s creator is from.
Trollied, which starts on Sky1 this week, is set in a fictional northern supermarket called Valco.
The eight-part series stars Horrocks as deputy manager Julie, who struggles to assert her authority and has a crush on the store manager, and Mark Addy as Andy, a dedicated butcher whose young apprentice is bored of chops, mince and ribs.
Other characters include a cashier who dreams of travelling and a recruit of Valco’s older person employment scheme, who is far from a natural on the tills.
Trollied was co-created by Anne-Marie O’Connor, who grew up in Wibsey and went to Yorkshire Martyrs School. She wrote the series with a team of writers. “We all storylined it then went away and wrote an episode each,” she said.
“It was a proper team effort, I really enjoyed it. It was the first time I’d worked in a team, as writing is usually very solitary.
“The action never leaves the supermarket, the set looks really authentic.
“There are little vignettes going on; I’m in episode five with my two children, playing a harassed shopper.”
Anne Marie said the series was originally set in Bradford, but it was later decided to set it in the North-West rather than a specific city.
