Parents and governors at a primary school are lobbying Bradford Council for a community car park to diminish the dangers posed to pupils by a busy road.

A petition signed by 250 people and calling for the Council’s asset management team to identify land for the parking area was handed over to ward Councillor Asama Javed by staff at Iqra Primary School, Manningham.

Asam Javed, chairman of the Drummond Road school’s governing body’s finance and personnel sub-committee and the councillor’s brother, said there had been too much talk and not enough action to address the issue.

Mr Javed said: “There is an on-going parking issue outside the school that has been there for years, but no one has taken a leading role. I have spoken to a lot of concerned parents since coming onto the governing body and been approached about it by a lot of people in the local area, including staff.”

The school has a volunteer who patrols Drummond Road and encourages parents who drop off and pick up their children to park responsibly.

Mr Javed said the road often became gridlocked at peak times, a situation compounded by rat-runners, and parents were having little option but to park temporarily on zebra crossings and yellow zig-zags outside Iqra.

The area bustles with activity as families travel to and from Iqra, Atlas and Miriam Lord schools, all within a short distance of one another.

Mr Javed said: “We believe there should be a community car park because you have got a sports centre, two other schools, a mosque and two churches in and around Drummond Road.”
