Wakeboarder Megan Barker is hoping to put judges at a top watersports event in a complete spin.

The 18-year-old, a former pupil of Hanson School, Swain House, Bradford, has travelled to Wales to compete at Wakestock – the UK’s biggest music and watersport festival – this weekend.

Her mid-air tricks while travelling more than 20mph behind a boat include back and forward rolls and 360-degree spins.

When she is not on the water, she is busy practicing her moves on a trampoline in her back garden holding on to a handle at the end of a rope strung up to her bedroom window to give her a lift.

Megan and her mum Jayne Everett moved away from Bradford five years ago just to be nearer a lake where she trains close to Driffield, but they still have lots of family and friends in the city and visit often.

Over the last few years, Megan, who has an apprenticeship as a junior artist with a design company, has won lots of titles for her sport including Girls UK National Wakeboard Champion 2008, Wake and Ski Boats Ladies champion 2010 and even managed to get first place in the Rider League UK Stop 1 contest the day after being out celebrating her 18th birthday.

And there will still be no rest for Megan after Wakestock because she will be flying straight out to Milan to be in a squad representing Great Britain in the world wakeboard championships.

“Megan really is out to impress this year. She’s the original waterbaby. Nothing’s impossible on water for her!” said Jayne.

Megan’s interest in the sport began when she went on a watersports holiday with her family and had a go at kneeboarding.

Two years later, at the age of 13, she was into wakeboarding which is described as balancing on a snowboard with your feet attached in your boots.
