Pioneering electronic road signs which flash warnings to drivers when they are going too fast are to be put up on a death-trap' section of road.

Road safety campaigners have welcomed the news that the system is to be installed for the first time on several danger roads in the district.

One of the vehicle-activated' warning signs is to be placed on the approaches to a bend in Bolton Road, Undercliffe next year, after nearby residents had campaigned for speed cameras on the road.

They had said that there had been far too many accidents on the stretch of road, but had been told that the number of casualties did not meet the criteria for speed cameras to be installed.

But they welcomed the news that the flashing signs would be set up to warn drivers that they are approaching the area too fast.

Aldo Devittoris, who owns the Ital Restaurant in Bolton Road, said: "I am pleased that something is going to be done because we are all very concerned that it is only a matter of time before there is another death on this road.

"Any measures that will help calm people's speeds are extremely welcome."

And Councillor Howard Middleton (Lib Dem, Bolton and Undercliffe) said: "Both the residents and myself welcome any news of improvements to the road but it will remain to be seen whether the devices selected work effectively on this road."

It is the first time the flashing devices have been used by Bradford Council's North Traffic Team.

A spokesman said: "We are putting them up on a number of roads in the Bradford north area in an attempt to get people to reduce their speed.

"If cars are travelling above a certain speed the device detects the vehicle and flashes up a warning telling them that they are approaching a bend.

"Annual lists of casualties are prepared that identify lengths of roads and sites for concern where injury incidents exceed expected norms.

"These lists and other assessments are used to help prepare programmes of engineering measures specifically focused on helping to address relevant road safety issues relating to Government targets for casualty reduction."

New road linings will be created on the section of Bolton Road between Shipley Airedale Road and Queen's Road / Lister Lane.

The work will be funded by the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership programme for 2007 to 2008.

Residents in Bolton Road had contacted the Telegraph & Argus following the launch of our Be Safe Not Sorry campaign, which is urging people to do their bit to contribute towards road safety.

They wanted speed cameras to be installed on the road because, they said, they had witnessed too many deaths and serious injuries on the road.

The spokesman for the Bradford North Traffic Team said: "The West Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership prioritises potential sites for speed cameras in accordance with Government criteria.

"These are at least three serious or fatal collisions in the last three years per km for static cameras, and 85 per cent of traffic travelling above the speed limit.

"The section of Bolton Road between Shipley Airedale Road and Queen's Rd has been analysed and does not meet that criteria.

"Therefore, this section of Bolton Road would not be considered for inclusion within the West Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership's programmes for future potential sites."
