Six groups in Bradford have come out top in this summer's Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

Addingham, Keighley and Hillworth Village in Keighley were the overall winners in their categories.

And Haworth Primary School's gardening club was also recognised alongside Abbeydale Care Home and Spindleberry Guest House - both in Ilkley.

Britain's best, Lister Park, has been honoured twice in a month - this time winning gold with Yorkshire in Bloom.

The results were announced at a ceremony in Bradford yesterday. And award-winning Lister Park picked up a gold prize in the tourist attraction section.

Villages, towns and tourist attractions across the district picked up a bunch of awards while communities across Bradford were praised for their floral displays, landscaping, conservation, recycling, lack of litter and beautiful green spaces.

A number of neighbourhoods, businesses and hotels were also commended, including Bradford University. The Haworth school was awarded the top prize in the Sir Richard Graham Youth Enterprise category.

The children were hailed as an example to their community and judges said they hoped other schools would develop similar clubs.

Addingham was the overall winner of the small country town award and Keighley topped the large town list.

The judges said Keighley was "supported by the enthusiasm and obvious involvement of the local community, it was good to see all age groups adding to the campaign, in particular the high involvement of schools and other community groups." Of Addingham the judges said: "It is clear when you drive into Addingham that you have entered a village where residents and businesses have worked together to create a clean and colourful environment."

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the executive member for the environment, said: "The comments from the judges illustrate how much work the residents of these villages and towns have put into making their communities bloom."

Baroness Kay Andrews OBE, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, presented neighbourhood awards to the Friends of Oakworth Park in Keighley, The Parade in Cottingley, Hallcliffe Community Garden in Baildon, Heaton Church yard in Bradford, Holy Trinity Church yard, Low Moor, Bradford and Ravenscliffe Community Centre, Bradford.

She praised Yorkshire in Bloom which she said enthused people.

"It isn't just about planters and hanging baskets. It's about everything that goes into making somewhere a place people want to live."
