Almost 3,000 women ran or walked around Lister Park, Bradford, yesterday to mark triumphs over cancer and to remember loved ones who were less fortunate.

Cancer Research UK, organisers of Race for Life, are hoping to have raised more than £250,000 towards finding cures for the disease from the event. There were morning and afternoon sponsored 5k jaunts.

Among the throngs were 15 pupils and ten staff at Marshfield Primary School, Bradford, who have raised at least £700 sponsorship.

Head teacher Colleen Jackson said: “Many of our children have been touched by cancer. Two of our children here have a mother who is seriously ill with cancer and we wanted to show our support for them.”

Sue Richardson, 60, and her pals Ruth Holt, 60, and Sue Lamb, 58, who attend St Saviour’s Church in Fairweather Green, took part together. Mrs Richardson said: “I did it because my cousin died of breast cancer. I feel good for doing it. I’m glad my friends helped.”

A soaked Victoria Haigh, 32, of Shipley, crossed the line first in the afternoon with a time of 21 minutes and four seconds.

As she finished she said: “I did it for my father who died of cancer ten years ago.”
