Tens of thousands of spectators are expected for one of the region’s biggest carnivals next weekend.

The Otley Carnival draws large crowds of visitors from miles around for the traditional parade through the town centre followed by a gala.

This year about 20 floats are expected to take part in the parade, which starts at 1.15pm on Saturday, June 18, from Wharfedale Farmers Auction, Leeds Road, with organisers expecting up to 30,000 people to attend.

The parade concludes at the Show Field at Bridge End, where there is free entry to the gala field.

The field is filled with stalls and sideshows, with a series of entertainment on offer throughout the day and the crowning of the Carnival Queen. The stalls and sideshows are run by a mixture of a commercial companies and charities to raise money for their causes.

Local charities who will be beneficiaries from the carnival’s fundraising this year are the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which will have an ambulance at the carnival, and the Otley Science Festival.

A spokesman for the organising committee said: “Carnival day is a highlight in the town’s calendar.’’
