Detectives investigating the discovery of a baby girl’s body at a waste management site in Shipley have made a fresh appeal to find her mother.

The remains of the new-born child were found in piles of rubbish by a worker at the Associated Waste Management site in Valley Road, in the early hours of Thursday, May 19.

It is believed the baby, who was white, might have died up to three days before she was found.

Police said she was unlikely to have been born in hospital. A post-mortem examination to find the cause of her death was inconclusive.

There has been no trace of the mother and last night police said she had still not been identified.

It is feared the mother could come from anywhere in West Yorkshire, as waste from the whole county is taken to the site.

Detective Superintendent Sukhbir Singh, who is leading the inquiry, said yesterday: “We thank members of the public for the information we have received so far and would continue to ask residents to get in touch.

“Inquiries very much remain ongoing and it is clear the answer to finding the mother of this child lies within the communities of West Yorkshire.”

Police received four calls from the public following an initial appeal to trace the mother of the full-term baby, but they have not led to her identification.

“The focus of the investigation is still on finding the mother,” said Det Supt Singh. “I would urge her to come forward and for the wider community to contact West Yorkshire Police.”

Anyone with information should call Detective Sergeant Ian Lawrie on 0845 6060606.
