Issues at home and abroad will be tackled by members of a Women Ambassadors Group, set up by a Bradford humanitarian charity.

The new programme by Basic Human Rights (BHR), which was set up by Bingley woman Anjum Tahirkheli and has an office in Sunbridge Road, Bradford, will include focus groups to encourage people to have their say on issues affecting women and children.

Its first fundraising event will be on Sunday at the Bradford Mela in Peel Park.

Costumed Disney characters will be making an appearance at the charity’s stall and there will be a variety of Indian and Pakistani food on sale.

A peace wall will be set up where people can post their messages in support of women and children suffering because of natural disasters or conflicts across the world.

Proceeds will help flood victims in Pakistan by enabling women and children there to get access to basic health care and clean drinking water.

The money will also help improve sanitation systems and provide basic education there.

BHR Women Ambassadors Group (WAG) team leader Shafia Khan said: “I have been involved with BHR as a volunteer, and encourage my children to be involved with volunteering. By joining BHR as one of the members of BHR WAG I feel ownership, I feel I have more responsibility and it is a privilege for me to be an ambassador for an international charity like Basic Human Rights.

“BHR is Bradford born and they are working globally tackling poverty and striving to form a peaceful and respectful society. On an international platform they raise awareness about the people of Yorkshire and their efforts to eradicate poverty.”
