Pedalling up some of the Bradford district’s many gradients can be daunting to even hardened cyclists, but going back down could be chosen as being the “perfect hill” in a competition being held for this year’s Sky Ride.

The city’s Sky Ride on July 31 will see riders being able to freewheel for more than a mile from Peel Park down Bolton Road to Little Germany, before they enjoy entertainment in the Urban Garden.

And as part of a national contest the organisers have asked people to pick their own perfect downhill ride.

Nominations should take into consideration the view and historical resonance, but most importantly, what the hill means to the person – whether it is the thrill of the descent or the memories it invokes.

The Bradford district is blessed with scenic hills from the heights above Ilkley to Queensbury, Thornton, Denholme, Oxenhope and Haworth.

Daniel Goodey, regional recreation manager for Yorkshire at British Cycling, said: “I think riding a bike downhill is one of the best things about cycling, and in Bradford there is no shortage of great hills to fly down.

“Whether it is out in the countryside or in the city, the feeling of the wind rushing through your hair as you effortlessly freewheel on your bike is something everyone who rides a bike will have enjoyed.”
