Fundraisers supporting this year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal are to take a culinary journey across the globe without having to leave the district.

The Lord Mayor’s Curry Club, which meets once a month at curry houses in the city to raise money for the appeal, is expanding to include restaurants serving dishes from other parts of the world.

The first event of the civic year will be held tomorrow at French eatery the Terrace Restaurant in Saltaire.

Diners will pay £15 with half the price going to this year’s appeal, which is raising money for Councillor Naveeda Ikram’s chosen charities, Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice and disability charity Bradnet.

Guests will give feedback on each participating restaurant, leading to an award at the end of the civic year.

Bradford solicitor John Wilson, who has taken over the running of the Curry Club after volunteering as a member of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal committee for almost a decade, is appealing for more restaurants in the district to come forward to take part.

He said: “I feel there’s scope for getting lots of business involved with fundraising activities. The theme is going to be around the world without leaving the boundaries of Bradford. That’s why I love living in Bradford. There’s literally a whole world in one city and that’s what we are trying to celebrate.”

Coun Ikram said: “The Curry Club has been extremely popular and we are very proud of the curry restaurants we have in Bradford. But we thought because we have a very diverse community in Bradford and there are some lovely other restaurants as well, we wanted to include them. I would urge everyone to come along and taste the world here in Bradford and I would like to thank the restaurants involved.”
