The dedication of a hospital volunteer from Bradford has been recognised at a prestigious award ceremony in London.

Trevor Constantine, the chairman of the Friends of Bradford Royal Infirmary, has been awarded the medal of the Order of Mercy for his voluntary service over many years in the community.

The awards ceremony took place at The Mansion House in the City of London, in the presence of the Sheriff of London and the Rt Hon Francis Maude MP, cabinet minister for The Big Society, and other distinguished guests.

The Rt Hon Lord Lingfield, president of the League of Mercy, said: “Mr Trevor Constantine has done extraordinary work for the welfare of others.

“He is a marvellous example of someone who has given wonderful service to his community and we were delighted to be able, on the recommendation of the charity, to make this well-deserved award.”

Mr Constantine, of Heaton, is a familiar face to many around Bradford Royal Infirmary, having been a volunteer for 15 years.

He said: “I feel really honoured to have been given this national award for my voluntary work and I believe it also recognises the work of all the people who are part of the Friends of the BRI.

“The award is as much for them as it is for me as all the volunteers work hard to raise money for the hospital as well as helping so many people who come to the BRI day in day out."
